How to keep a dog with heart disease happy and active

Hearing that your dog has heart disease can feel scary. The good news is that many dogs with heart conditions continue to enjoy happy, fulfilling lives for months or even years with the right care. Small changes to their routine can make a real difference to their comfort and wellbeing.

1. Follow your vet's treatment plan

Medication is often the most important part of managing heart disease. Give medicines as prescribed and not to stop them without speaking to your vet.

Regular check-ups allow your vet to monitor your dog’s heart and adjust treatment if needed.

2. Keep exercise gentle

Exercise is still important, but it should be appropriate for your dog’s condition.

Instead of long, strenuous walks, think:

  • Shorter walks more often
  • Plenty of opportunities to sniff and explore
  • Avoiding exercise during very hot weather

Watch for signs that your dog needs a rest, including excessive panting, coughing or reluctance to continue.

3. Support their heart through nutrition

A balanced diet plays an important role in overall health.

Many owners also choose to add a heart support supplement containing ingredients that have been researched for cardiovascular health, such as taurine, CoQ10, L-carnitine and omega-3 fatty acids.

Supplements should complement, not replace, veterinary treatment.

4. Help maintain a healthy weight

Extra weight means the heart has to work harder.

Keeping your dog at a healthy body condition can reduce strain on their cardiovascular system while helping them stay active for longer.

5. Reduce stress

Dogs with heart disease often benefit from a calm, predictable routine.

Provide comfortable places to rest, avoid unnecessary stress and make sure fresh water is always available.

6. Monitor changes

Knowing what’s normal for your dog makes it easier to spot changes early.

Contact your vet if you notice:

  • Increased coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fainting episodes
  • Reduced appetite
  • Less interest in exercise
  • Swollen abdomen

Early intervention often leads to better outcomes.

A happy life is possible

A diagnosis of heart disease doesn’t mean the end of adventures, cuddles or quality time together.

With veterinary care, sensible exercise, good nutrition and plenty of love, many dogs continue to enjoy a wonderful quality of life.

At StarTails, our mission is to support dogs living with heart disease by providing carefully formulated nutritional support alongside veterinary care, while helping owners make informed decisions about their dog’s health.
